For example, You scan: the channel listing on the TV, the telephone directory, and then an alpabhetic word on the dictionary.

It is a reading technique, skill, you often use when looking up a word, e.g. a date, a name, or a number in a text. Particular name, telephone number, date and time, alphabet and number. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrase. Run your finger down the page to keep your eyes focusing on search for key words. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.
